Brief overview about clutch disk

A clutch disc (or clutch plate) is a critical component in vehicles and tractors, as it connects the engine to the gearbox and enables smooth power transmission. The performance and durability of a clutch largely depend on the type of friction material used on the clutch disc facing.

Based on facing materials, clutch discs are commonly classified into four main types:

Organic Clutch Facing (White Facing):
Organic clutch plates are made from phenolic resins, rubber compounds, and friction modifiers such as metallic powders or oxides. These are available in molded and woven types, with woven facings reinforced by fiberglass yarn for higher strength and durability. Organic clutches provide smooth engagement and are widely used in standard vehicles and tractors for daily operations. However, molded facings are less durable and generally not recommended.

Heavy-Duty Organic Facing:
This is an improved version of organic material with higher metallic content, which enhances heat resistance and durability. These clutch discs can withstand higher temperatures (around 700°F) and are suitable for towing, hauling, and moderate performance applications while still maintaining smooth engagement.

Ceramic Clutch Facing (Black Facing):
Ceramic facings are made from materials like copper, iron, tin bronze, silicon dioxide, and graphite. They can tolerate very high temperatures (up to 1000°F), making them ideal for racing and heavy-duty use. However, they tend to engage more abruptly due to a higher friction coefficient.

Feramic and Feramalloy Facing:
Feramic materials combine steel, bronze, and graphite, offering high friction and quick engagement, suitable for racing and agricultural heavy-duty work. Feramalloy is an advanced version that provides similar strength and heat resistance but with smoother operation and less vibration.

In summary, woven organic clutch discs are best for regular use, while ceramic and feramic materials are preferred for high-performance and heavy-duty applications.
